Blood Angels v. Thousand Sons

This past weekend, Max and Jason wanted to shake off the rust and throwdown with the biggest match since Yearhammer featuring a showdown between the Blood Angels and Thousand Sons. Who won? Read on to find out!

Game Setup

Points:
The game was ran using Power Levels.
Both teams were at 104 PL.

Only War Mission:
We used the Open War cards to decide what the game type would be.

  • The Objective: War of Attrition was the objective for the game. Each player adds up the Power Ratings of all enemy units that are destroyed during the battle. At the end of the fifth battle round, the player with the highest total wins the battle (even if their own army has been wiped out!).
  • The Twist: Many Paths to Victory was drawn. Generate an extra Objective. Both objectives are used for this battle. For our Second Objective, The Prize was selected, place an objective marker at the center of the battlefield. The player whose model is carrying the marker at the end of the fifth battle round wins the battle.
  • The Ruse: No ruse card was played as the teams were at equal power level.

Deployment:
Using the Open War cards, the teams deployed using the Modified Spearhead Assault layout

Highlights and Score Breakdown

  • Before the match began, Jason used 1 CP to gain another relic: Helm of the Third Eye. It would prove to be a well spent CP to gain more in the game. Jason was also running Cultists/Renegades as Tzaangors to try them out.
  • Max went first, taking advantage of Jason’s open backfield and dropping in a Drop Pod full of Multi-Melta Devatstators. He also dropped in his Captain in Terminator Armor, Lieutenant with a Jump Pack and Stern Guard with Meltas. They in turn try to light up Ahriman on the Skyshield Landing Pad, but with Ahriman’s 3++ inv save, he weathered the storm . .. barely.
  • Max used the Flak Missile stratagem to take a whopping 9 wounds off Magnus! He also gained First Blood (although it didn’t count this game) by eliminating almost a full squad of Tzaangors, who failed their morale check and ran away.
  • It was now Jason’s turn to strike back! A Daemon Prince used his Dark Crystal to send Ahriman across the table to a safer spot (and to attack from behind). Once safely across the board, Ahriman used 1 CP to use the Chaos Familiar stratagem to swap out his Death Hex for Temporal Manipulation to heal himself.
  • There was A LOT of smites thrown around!
  • A unit of Tzaangors, angered by the earlier attacks on their brothers assaulted the Stern Guard. Not a single model was lost to Overwatch and they attacked! Using 2 CP to fight twice, they annihilated the two units.
  • By turn 4, things were looking grim for the Blood Angels. Max decided to risk it all by throwing the Death Company Dread (with the Prize), 3 remaining heavy flamer devastators into the Storm Raven. But that didn’t last long, it was blown out of the sky by Smites on Jason’s next turn…
  • The Thousand Sons then cleaned up during their Psychic phase . . .

Final Score:
Jason: 2 VP
Max: 0 VP

Victory for the Thousand Sons

After five rounds of battle, the Thousand Sons turned everything to dust by killing all the Blood Angels and claiming victory in the name of Change! It was a crazy back and forth battle that came down to really good inv save dice rolls by Jason.
